Is the red color on the back cover from the scanner or is that part of the book? I'm asking this because it's showing up on the front too.

Yes to rounded lower spine corner and the staples are stiched slightly toward the front cover. Page line up is less off but not perfect.
I'm concerned about the color bleed through from inside the covers (it may be a function of the scanner) so 8.0 if the covers are somehow becoming transparent in some fashion.
I remember buying 40 or so of these at work one day in 82 or so to use as Christmas presents.

This copy seems to have some issues. That sure looks like a small edge/spine tear to me (near the misplaced bottom staple) as well as some slight staple pull and associated surface color breaks at the staple tines.
It does look like some moderate to heavy transparancy and a touch of surface soiling too.
3 of the 4 corners look a touch blunted. Slight bindery nip at the heel of the spine.
Not too shabby, but not NM (barely VF- in my book). I'd call it a 7.0 based on what I see, but:
CGC called it an 8.0

It is a really sweet looking book. That's a gorgeous spine. Slightly rear-cover-biased staples (just the way I like 'em, keeps the spine nice and flat, but believe it or not, is a deduction). Gorgeous back cover.
I see some blunted/rounded open corners and a few edge dings though, so I'll go with an 8.5.. A strangely uneven right hand edge cut too...this is'nt a comic-keys book, is it ? JUUUUUSSSST kidding!
Though I can see why you guys (and CGC) might grade it higher.

You're not the only one to notice the funky right side. I saw the cut as odd too. Especially the way the angle is on that relative to the pages. But if was trimmed, CGC would catch it, right?:?: :?: :?: :!: :!: :!:
I guess it doesn't matter as long as CGC "certifies" it as unrestored and gives it a universal blue label.

I, too, would be more than happy to shell out $2.00 for an Avengers #95 in that condition even though I have several nicer copies of that book. The great Neal Adams' art and Roy Thomas' classic Kree-Skrull War story make it worthwhile. Like rowand says, it would make a nice gift especially to a newbie.

Actually it was more like a 9 parter staring in Avengers 89!
Grab a copy of the Graphic novel (should there be one) Neal Adams art on a Roy Thomas masterpiece. One of the perfect comic storylines!
This was the place where Rick Jones first manifestated his godlike powers.
An intricate, well scripted story arc that starts with the re-animation of the sentry, I believe it was, and leads us through galaxy spanning warfare down to the personal story that kept the whole misugash running!
Rick Jones saves the day, and the Avengers, and the whole universe, singlehandedly. Show and tell must have been fun once school started.
It was immediately topped by Avengers 98-100 that blew the roof offa the joint when every Avenger ever (except Red Wolf) journeyed to Mount Olympus and saved the entire Greek Pantheon. The opening panels to 100 were breathtaking as the Avengers are mostly introduced and the monologue reads. "And one, thankfully, only one who brushes the trees aside!" That was the Hulk's introduction!
Read 'em and weep, fanboys! They don't write 'em like that anymore!
rowand
06-10-2006, 06:19 AM
EBay has a copy of the two Graphic Novel set that covers this story arc with a starting bid of $1.99 Item Number 6636457724. It is a great read!

But if I ever sold a SA book like this on ebay, with a blown staple and wear like this and called it a Fine-/5.5 as the stated grade, I would expect not only negative feedback, but New Jersey hit squads showing up on my doorstep...yeesh.
A blown staple (thus a semi-detached cover and interior pages) is a MAJOR defect in my book.

Holy smokes...congratulations you guys.
Sour grapes time over...congratulations Jaeldubyoo and Linda!
I am with you on this one CG.
Since I am old school I would have described this one as a VG or possibly a VG+ if it had enough eye appeal if I sold it.
But it is my job (as game master) to find some tricky CGC graded books to mess up everyones scores  .

I'm going with a 4.0 and I think I'm being easy on it.
With the all over wear and that tape with the name on the back that's the grade I'm giving it. Now of course it be CGC it's most likely a 6.5

For this one I am going to go with a 3.0.
It seems like a perfect copy to not get slabbed and to keep out to read.

marvelguy
06-12-2006, 10:55 PM
I'm gonna say a 3.0 because of the tape. I've always heard that in order to remove the tape, bumper stickers, stickers, etc.. you apply heat to the surface of the item in question, it will remove it easily but in this case that's very dangerous, the tape might be old to get it off. If you tried this, you might rip it off. But anyways a great book.
The Charlton Guy
06-13-2006, 12:22 AM
I'll stick to my guns and call it like I see it:
Good+ (2.5).
And that's really pushing it...
The Charlton Guy
06-13-2006, 12:35 AM
I will qualify that by saying that the front cover is in pretty good shape overall. It's just that staple rust that kills it. This is also a shame (no have it slabbed I mean) because further rust migration to the interior pages will continue inside the slab.
This would be a great restoration candidate. If it was disassembled, cleaned, staples replaced, tape removed, etc. it would make for a very respectable copy.
As it is, still a solid filler copy I wouldn't mind having.
(But I still call it a 2.5 on a generous grading day, more like a 2.0).

jaeldubyoo
06-19-2006, 08:15 PM
Personally, I don't like soiling. But I think CGC is more lenient on soiling up to NM range as long as it's not heavily soiled. This would be a good candidate for professional cleaning to get a better grade if the owner was so inclined (and unscrupulous). The comic looks very nice otherwise. On a feel-good day I would grade it no higher than 7.5, but I'm guessing CGC would grade it higher. I'm going to go out on a limb and choose a CGC grade of 8.5.

HHHMMMM......
Soiled edge at back cover.
Looks like a slight dust shadow forming around the edge too.
There's a bit of a crease in the upper right corner and what appears to be a spinner rack crease by the upper staple.
Is that a red pen mark on the back cover by the spine?
Still a very sweet book.
I'll stretch this one and go with a VF 8.0
Gallinator

But CGC has a serious bias towards high-mid-grade GA books (particularly if they are Heritage bound), thus my 8.0.

Wow! The corners on that are so sharp you could use it as a weapon. And the colors are nice, especially the blinding white. Looks almost flawless. Gotta be a 9.8. Maybe higher but how can you grade an ultra-high grade comic from a scan? When you have such a nice comic, it becomes a crapshoot when you send it into CGC.
Well, I am going to go with a 9.2. It is pretty pristine, but the bottom corner looks a little dinged to me.
And WOW, I am on a roll, but that can not last forever. My method is to take what I think it is, lower that by 1.5, then put that into percentage. Then for every leap year it has been around I add 0.2, then multiply by 100. Then subtract 0.4 for each degree the thermostat says about the original grade. Simple really!

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but I am. Judging a comic from scans is an inexact science. I'd loved to see the graders' notes on that one. I have one that I always felt would be a 9.0-9.2 with sharp corners, nice color and white pages. But it doesn't look as good as those scans. I think it's also hard to grade because it is square-bound and you can't see the production quality along the side.

CGC gave this one a 5.0.
At least that's what I think Fling, the CGC grading monkey would have given it.

I can't go lower than a 7.0
That's a major pretty book. Page quality is very low which is what hurts the grade quite a bit.
I am so prepared to be wrong about this one it's not funny.
Gary
It is probably going to be a little lower than this, but I am afraid to go too low. I am going to follow Camper's lead and add a little:
5.5
marvelguy

Fling flips that special coin for me deciding between a 5.5 and 6.5. He says a 5.5 is what the book grades at.

I'm going to be conservative like Linda and call it a 7.5. I see little problems with the corners and some color-breaking creases on the spine (although they are small). Is that a dust shadow on the back cover?Having been burned on the Giant-size Conan, I'll curb my enthusiasm for a higher grade.
camper49
07-14-2006, 12:16 PM
I'll pipe in with a solid 7.0.
Some problems for sure but not huge problems.
Since this is the last round I am going to guess conservativly and say an 8.0, because it could very well go higher or lower depending on the mood of the grader.

Wait a minute, PROTEST! PROTEST! I was safely in second to last place after round 9, and somehow I'm now in last in the main category just because Gallinator went missing? I demand an official inquiry.
One good thing is that if I ever sell him more comics, I now have documentation that any comic I send him is actually 2 grades higher than he thinks it is.

Hey Linda,
Been on vacation in Northern Michigan for a week! Just got in a little bit ago.
I will probably start a new round Sun or Mon. Got a big party going on here Sat (wife's 40th B-day party) and will be getting ready for that tomorrow.
(over 200 posts to read since I have been gone.....I got lots of reading to do tonight!)
