Anybody remember Herbie Popnecker, the Fat Fury?
This is a character I could relate to as a kid. While I wasn't short and fat as a kid, sometimes I felt like him as an outsider. He was misunderstood by his parents (what kid wasn't?). His father was always called him a "fat little nothing." He was adored by beautiful women (every little boy's fantasy). He could talk to all manner of beasts. He was famous and celebrated thoughout the world (except at home) and knew all kinds of famous people. He even had a lollipop for every occasion, including time travel. And you didn't want to be bopped by his lollipop. What's not to like about him?
Herbie was drawn by Ogden Whitnery and written by Shane O'Shea (Richard Hughes) in an understated way perfectly suited for the character. There was an attempt to revive Herbie in 1992 by Dark Horse, but fell well short of achieving the same results.
