The Charlton Zone!

#oldie# Here's a thread to discuss and to disseminate, to examine in depth or to completely ignore, the indubitable and incontroversial FACT that

CHARLTON COMICS GIVE YOU MORE!

Here's a little gem of a story that I dug up from a previous PhotoBucket incarnation at the First Corral, a little tale from an early issue of "Space Mysteries".

Check it out and become a Charlton Devotee!

There you have it folks! A Pulitzer Prize winning gem from the Charlton Zone Vault!

Feel free to make your own contributions, I'll be adding more in the decades to come!

Best regards,

I dunno if I will get rid all of my comics and trade em in for Charltons, but I remember loving this thread at the old Corral!

Keep em comin' CG!

Perhaps CG could write a regular column here at the Corral explaining why Charlton Comics be all that and a bag of potato chips?

On second thought, if CG writes it, I guess we can't call it "regular", but it would be...interesting?

Ah, that was good! A nice Charlton Grindhouse-style double feature. I remember the flying saucer story from the old Corral but don't recall the Spurs Jackson/Hitler story. Can't wait for more.

Hey C.G. or any other Charlton lovers out there. What is the CDC (not CGC) logo on the top left corner of some Charlton's?? Here's the example:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v633/Hank27/cheyennekid.jpg

You guys will be happy to know I got my boss back into collecting comics after a 20-30 year hiatus and he just picked this one up and I'm sorry to say I couldn't figure out what the CDC logo stands for. He's a big Charlton lover too and collects just for the love of comics. I just got him 8 Freak Brothers books he's been wanting back since a so called friend of his "Borrowed/Stole" his collection of Freak Brothers comics back about thirty years ago and destroyed them. The story had a rather happy ending though, the dude apparently got very drunk and fell down a flight of stairs thus killing himself...he deserved it! You don't mess with a man's comics! True story! Anyway's, if anyone knows the answer we'd appreciate it! Charton's are the Deshnizzle!

Hank.

I'm very sentimental about the name Charlton, but in my case, it's from a tiny number of them - a single issue of Ghost Manor (a very underrated horror comic - I found that out later when I got other issues much later), and some comedy ones, like their version of Beetle Bailey. Do you have a lot of horror (as opposed to SF) and comedy ones?

Being a Spider-man fan and loving Ditkos run, I naturally looked at what he did after Spider-man #38. I really became interested in Charlton comics and got into Ditko's Blue Beetle. Now I am really having fun reading the few Gorgos I have. Konga looks cool too. One of my favourite silver age comics is Fantastic Giants #24. Awesome stories and great Ditko artwork. A must for any Charlton fan.

Here is a terrific article I found that documents the history of Charlton.

The Charlton Guy

That is a great article...

I love this part:

"Lunchtime would often extend into mid-afternoon. There was a large, empty lot next to the office part of the building where we would play softball. Pat would be hanging out the window [yelling] at everyone to get back to work. Steve Ditko and Billy Anderson would duel each other with bent coat hangers—a la Zorro—while card games and ping-pong matches became marathon events in the cafeteria. Visitors were told that these 'creative people' needed this break from work to relax. The cards and ping-pong became quite out of hand, and many a deck of cards were torn to shreds and ping-pong paddles became lethal weapons. Joe Gill and John D'Agostino usually were the culprits."

The Charlton Guy
02-19-2008, 11:43 AM
And yes, I have been lax in my posting...#tomato#

Here's a couple of my recent Charlton snags:

Space Wars #2 from 1959, lookin' Very Fine-:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a240/the-charlton-guy/February%202008/CG-Space-War-2.jpg

And #8 from one year later with a classic Ditko cover and story:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a240/the-charlton-guy/February%202008/CG-Space-War-8.jpg

I got lucky on these two gems. Both are very sweet, with the #8 pushing NM-.
Difficult to find these Charlton 10 centers in this condition.

The #8 really looks trimmed at an angle. It looks narrower at the bottom, but it does seem to match pretty well with the scan at comics.org.

I think Charlton Publications used a hacksaw blade on their trimmer.

Ever check out the interior edges on their 1950's/early 60's books? It looks like they were cut with pinking shears.

They were cut out of square, off-kilter, slanted, interior artwork chopped for a 1/2" into the panels, staples place hither, thither and yon, and I have even seen an upside down cover or two.

That's one of the reasons that high grade, well-printed 50's and early SA Charlton's are a true rarity.

(There...defensive rant over...now where the heck DID I put that exacto blade?)

Space Wars #2 from 1959, lookin' Very Fine-

(and)

#8 from one year later with a classic Ditko cover and story.

That's a real sweet pair of dime-store funny books there, Charlton Guy! An even sweeter, new avatar too!

... so 'phallically' symbolic Space War books didn't hit spinner-racks until the swingin' '70s? How can that be?

Believe me I know. I did willingly buy some trimmed EC's recently. I love the originals regardless. It does look like it's cut irregular, whether by the guys in Derby or some dealer since. It doesn't bother me, but I wouldn't call it NM if foul deeds were done to it. I was just wondering if you checked closely or just wrote it of as Charlton quality at it's finest.

I just got this in the mail today, and I'm having a hard time figuring it out. The colors on the cover just don't look right, and I don't know why. At first I thought it looked a little like a 3-D cover, so I put on the glasses and tried that: nope. Is this a different printing method or something? Rotogravure or something? I'm now leaning towards thinking it's just a really poorly colored cover. For one thing, the hat on the guy behind the car appears to be in front of the main character's arm.
But seriously, has anyone ever seen anything quite like this before? In or out of the Charlton universe?

Neat book. Spacemen and dinosaurs - what's not to like?

Who do you think did the art? I am leaning towards Wood, but he usually signed his stuff. Wait a minute, GCD is your friend. Nope, Dick Giordano, pencils and inks.

Sort of strange composition, the threatening dinosaur is facing away from the viewer and the astronauts are so far away there is no detail to their shock except for the body language.

Still, a nice clean cover and I do like the spaceship #clap#

The key word is "dead". Would you prefer to see this board die as oppose to having threads revitalized?

Weird.

Not at all. I try not to start new threads when one's already exist on the topic. And guess what? This thread was no further down than the second page.

It's a lovely book, Ill, but it is bog standard saddle stitched 64 pages - just like the Golden Age.

Probably accounts for its nice state of preservation i.e. lack of production glue on the spine, that tends to break down rather quickly and leave the cover "dangling".

Speaking of not often seen, Charlton Guy has been strangely absent from this thread for more than three years. Has he abandoned Charltons to become a Marvel zombie? Or has he shifted his collecting focus to CGC slabbed books because microtrimmed comics need love too? Is he devoting all his spare time to getting on Architect's good side so that his banishment from the CGC board can be lifted? Or is it just a case of creative fatigue or even bankruptcy on his part? Has his wit deserted him? Inquiring minds want to know.
